Wolffsohn, David
(1856-1914)
   German Zionist leader. He was born in Dorbiany, Lithuania, and lived in Cologne, where he was a timber merchant. An active Zionist, he was a co-founder of a society to promote Jewish agricultural work and handi-crafts in Palestine. Later he became an assistant to Theodor Herzl, who entrusted him with the prepa-rations for the founding of the Jewish Colonial Trust. In 1898 he went with Herzl to Palestine to meet Kaiser William II. Wolffsohn was elected to succeed Herzl as president of the World Zionist Organization.
